The small village of Outhgill is where James Faraday, father of Michael Faraday once lived. Michael Faraday was an eminent scientist and a pioneer of electricity generation.

Dist:0.2km<br/>A replica of a stone that a William Henry Mounsey (1808 - 1877) set up on Black Fell Moss near to the source of the River Eden. William Mounsey was wealthy and a fluent linguist in Greek, Latin, Persian and Welsh. After an army career he became a solicitor and an eccentric. He wore his hair long and became known as the Jew of Carlisle although he was not of the Jewish faith. In 1850 he decided to walk from the family estate near the mouth of the Eden on the Solway Firth to the river's source. The stone, a post really, was made of Dent Marble, a form of limestone, and had Greek and Latin inscriptions. It stood for twenty years until some navvies building the Settle to Carlisle Railway found it and, not understanding the inscription, smashed it up. Not long after the Second World War the stone pieces were brought down to Kirby Stephen with a view to repairing it but the limestone had deteriorated badly. This replica is an exact copy but made of better quality limestone.
