The footbridge crosses the River Parrett, here channelled as part of the Somerset Levels drainage systems, leading to Aller Moor and the village of Aller below Aller Hill in the distance [[ST4029]]. I see from the map that the Macmillan Way West goes along here. That is not the main Macmillan Way, which I walked, but maybe it is a path for the future. This photo was taken from the 1158 Penzance to London Paddington train, having left Taunton at 1529.

Dist:0.5km<br/>Is it me, or is this massive red brick bridge not a bit over the top for the Somerset Levels? You can see it for miles around... John Webb gave me some further info on the history of the site on 24 Aug 2011. "The railway line at this point was built in the 1930s by the Great Western Railway (GWR) as part of their "Cut-off" scheme designed to provide a more direct route to the West Country without having to go all the way round through Bristol. (It was assisted by the government to help relieve unemployment of those times.) I gather from several contacts with knowledgeable persons that the GWR decided to build bridges rather than level crossings along the new stretches of line to keep trains on the move and minimise the costs both of installation and maintenance by not using level crossings. Apparently the former girder bridge at this point was the original 1930s bridge which had reached the end of its life and needed replacing."
