Marketing of the development has just started; hardly fortuitous timing given the reduction in mortgage availability resulting from the 'credit crunch' caused in large part by the sub-prime mess in America. The project hasn't yet been completed as can be seen at the right of the image.

Dist:0.1km<br/>First seen in this image [[304007]] and secondly here [[367391]] the site is now being redeveloped for residential use. The site, when complete, will be known as Dorcan Square reflecting the historical name of the area between Stratton St Margaret and Coate.

Dist:0.1km<br/>This square is split roughly 50/50 between residential and commercial. W H Smith's office and warehouse complex is probably the largest in the square. Smiths have been here since about the late 1960s.

Dist:0.2km<br/>A bit of a blot on the landscape, the building has been empty for several years. Since this photo was taken, further deterioration has occurred. The problem seems to be that the building cannot be adapted for modern needs. Whatever the reasons for its decrepitude, it's time to accept the inevitable and knock it down.

Dist:0.4km<br/>McDonald's is a popular fast food outlet with a world-wide network of branches. This one is about 15 years old and does a brisk business. It is one of two drive-thrus in Swindon. There is also a town centre store. I have recently obtained an image of the Cirencester McDonalds which can be viewed here http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/608964

Dist:0.4km<br/>The retail park is in two parts, north and south. This is the northern section which is all retail. The southern part includes some retail outlets but is predominantly leisure oriented with a multiscreen cinema, a bingo hall and several restaurants. Visible in this image are McDonald's Drive-Thru, Next clothes retailer, JJB sportswear shop and Brantano shoe store. The area was previously an industrial area.

Dist:0.4km<br/>I believe these are the show homes for this new development that does not yet appear on the OS maps, but does on Google Earth. Lit up for Yuletide with perhaps a little more restraint than some others.

Dist:0.5km<br/>This building is a modern one opened only in the last two or three years. The cladding is probably powder-coated steel and it has concealed rainwater gutters. Personally, I love the colour.

Dist:0.5km<br/>Swindon, much like Birmingham, isn't known for its major rivers as it doesn't have any. The Cole is a minor tributary of the Thames, which it joins at Lechlade. Here the Cole is flowing through Greenbridge retail park.
