A new facility was built a bit further north, the entrance to which can be seen at the left of the picture. Bus passengers now have to walk a bit further to reach the real centre of the city, taking second place to the needs of business.

Dist:0.2km<br/>View southward from Up Main platform 4 to Down main platform 7, where LMS 'Jubilee' 6P 4-6-0 No. 45638 'Zanzibar' is heading the 08.38 express from London Marylebone, when the London Midland Region had taken over the ex-Great Central main line for its decline, although the great Station had another five years before it was obliterated. On the middle line is an LNE L1 2-6-4T.

Dist:0.2km<br/>The picture quality is low as it is scanned from a tiny print of a Kodak Brownie picture I took over 50 years ago, at the age of 11, but perhaps it is of interest in showing a scene which no longer exists. Nottingham Victoria and the Great Central route from Manchester and Sheffield to London Marylebone closed in 1967. The station was quickly demolished, apart from its clock tower, and most of its large site was filled by the Victoria shopping centre. Here LNER B1 4-6-0 61376 brings a train from Sheffield, which has just emerged from Mansfield Road Tunnel, into the very long main southbound platform. To the left and right of the engine are the sheer cuttings in the sandstone - the station platforms were a long way below street level, especially at the north end. The buildings on the skyline are those which once stood on York Road (left), Woodborough Road (centre) and Huntingdon Street (right). The lower-quadrant signal on the right, controlling departure from the bay platform, is one of the original Great Central ones (unlike the more modern types on the left of the picture). The Station site is now occupied by the Victoria Centre, a large modern centre with flats over and multi-storey car parks. Parts of the latter occupy the northern part of the site where this view is taken.

Dist:0.2km<br/>This is the southern portal of Carrington Tunnel, and marked the exit from Nottingham's Victoria Station. The Station was built in a cutting carved out of the Bunter Sandstone, and the space is now filled by the Victoria Centre. The multi-storey carpark goes down from entrance level, but not underground!

It was built for the Nottingham Brewery Company in 1899, at the same time that Victoria Station was being built nearby. This shot shows the Tudor rose finial over the porch, the ashlar mullions and, to the left, the side of one of the three first-floor oriels on the Mansfield Road elevation (a motif Fothergill had also used on The Black Boy Hotel in Long Row, which was unforgivably demolished in the 1960s).
