Dist:0.6km<br/>Built 1886 by W & F Wills & Co of Bridgwater and used in a local brickworks. It is most unusual in having camshaft operated drop valves with two steam valves and two exhaust valves. These are cam operated and the steam cams have a variable profile and are moved axially by the governor (variable valve timing is nothing new).

Dist:0.6km<br/>One of the Somerset Levels drainage stations. Has an 1861 steam engine driving an Appold centrifugal pump. The only workable in situ example (but the pump is now dry).

Dist:0.6km<br/>This was originally steam, later diesel and now electric. When I took the picture the two Ruston diesels were hammering away on a wet January day. The crane in the background is building the replacement electric pumping station.

Dist:0.6km<br/>Steam for the site is raised in this large Marshall portable boiler of 1938 and red-lined at 50 psi. The firing area is under cover to the right and the door on the left leads to a series of engines in a covered exhibition area. The station's original brick chimney is out of use but has been rebuilt. The original Lancashire boiler is life expired.

Dist:0.6km<br/>This is not the original Lancashire boiler, which is out of use, but rather the working Marshall portable boiler. This was built in 1938 and originally used as a standy boiler in London. This is the firing end with a shelter to keep the weather off the fireman, neatly stacked fuel (wood) and a wooden trolley for transporting the fuel.

Dist:0.6km<br/>A close up of the Sisson test engine [[2015621]] showing a Dobbie McInnes indicator. This device produces a drawing on a piece of card showing the pressure in the cylinder versus the piston position. The area enclosed by this loop is equivalent to the mean effective pressure (P) on the piston in lb/sq.in. The indicated horsepower = PLAN/33,000 P = mean effective pressure - lb/sq.in. L = piston stoke in feet. A = piston area - sq.in. N = number of strokes/minute. 33000 = the number of ft.lb./min in one horsepower. IHP is the work done in the cylinder on the piston. This engine is fitted with a flywheel brake to measure brake horsepower. BHP is smaller than IHP due to friction in the mechanism and BHP/IHP x 100 = mechanical efficiency. Thermodynamic efficiency is a much lower number and is the ratio of energy in the steam to energy appearing as work and for a non-condensing engine would be in single figures. Thermodynamic efficiency for the whole cycle from energy in fuel to energy as work is an even lower number.

Dist:0.6km<br/>Built by W Sisson & Co Ltd, Gloucester, engine numbers 5915 and 5916 of 1956 for Bournemouth Technical College. Two inverted vertical single cylinder enclosed steam engines with a common flywheel. Can be operated as simple or compound. The flywheel is arranged for a Prony brake to measure brake horsepower. The engines also have indicators to measure the indicated horsepower that is developed in the cylinders. BHP/IHP x 100 = mechanical efficiency. Once upon a time, practical thermodynamic was taught all over the land and every college had a steam test engine. It is quite possible there are now none left in situ.

Dist:0.6km<br/>Little is known about this engine and hoist other than that it came from a ropemaking establishment in Dorset and may have been an adapted marine engine. It is intended to restore this to steam in due course.
