The bridge was originally constructed in 1849 to the design of Joseph Locke, utilizing three cast iron spans, which are visible on the upstream or near side of the bridge in this photograph. However doubts about the long term stability of cast iron concerned later Victorian engineers, and a new bridge, using wrought iron trusswork, was built on the downstream side of the original, to the design of Edward Andrews, between 1891 and 1895. The Locke bridge was subsequently abandoned for rail traffic. Today the bridge carries Network Rail's trackwork between Barnes Bridge and Chiswick stations.

Appearing somewhat forlorn and underused in today's age the bandstand and its two accompanying shelters on The Promenade are surrounded by semi-circular terracing and there is a flight of steps directly opposite to the left that lead to a slipway and the river. Unfortunately a band of scrubby vegetation has grown up between the park and the river, visible on the left side of the photograph, so there is hardly any view of the river from here at all.

Dating back to a more innocent period in history these public conveniences have long since been boarded up. There is Art Deco textwork carving in the lintel above the door advising that this is for "Men". The ladies' block a few metres away is in an equivalent state of dereliction.

A Routemaster on Route 9 for Mortlake passes along The Terrace (A3003) under the railway bridge at Barnes Bridge Station. The railway continues to the right giving access to the main Barnes Railway Bridge crossing the River Thames.

Well known to boat race afficionados is this triple iron bowstring girder bridge, which has Grade II Listed status. It wes reconstructed in 1895 from the older bridge of 1849. The bridge carries the Hounslow Loop Line.
