Dist:0.2km north<br/>"The Elms" is a house built in 1735 for Sir Joseph Ayloffe, Keeper of the Record Office. It remained a private house until 1964, when it became a school. The last owners were the Farnell family, who built a teddy bear factory next to the house. The house is now the administrative building of Twyford Church of England High School, which was established in 1980. Photo taken during a London Open House day - note visitors on the roof. Dist:0.2km north<br/>This is the south wall of The Elms, which is the administrative building of Twyford Church of England High School. Tuck pointing is a decorative white ribbon applied over hand-made irregular bricks to give a neat and uniform appearance. Dr Gerard Lynch in a long description on the Brickmaster website http://www.brickmaster.co.uk/tukcpointing.htm tells us it is: "a highly skilled and refined method of pointing brickwork whereby the overall mortar joint is coloured to match the brick and grooved while still 'green' to receive a carefully placed lime-putty : silver sand joint, which is then carefully trimmed to form a precise ribbon-like profile. Its intention, in England, was to create an illusion of gauged ashlared brickwork on walling constructed of standard, often irregular, handmade bricks."

The farmers' market started on May 12th 2007 after refurbishment of the square, and currently is from 9am to 2pm on Saturdays. Dist:0.6km east<br/>The area around St Mary's church in Acton has just been refurbished as a town square. There are two areas of market at week-ends; this is for clothes, handicrafts, and similar. The nearest stall has goods from Ghana. See Action Acton http://www.actionacton.com/town_centre.htm for details. The other area nearby is a farmers' market.

Dist:0.7km south<br/>As well as a fine collection of vintage buses, the depot also has a fine collection of trains and London Transport Signs. The depot is also the permanent store for the Museum's documents.
