This is Ordnance Survey flush bracket number 10061 http://www.bench-marks.org.uk/bm2586 dating from the days before the second world war when the entire mainland of Britain was comprehensively surveyed and mapped. Even though these flush brackets are now largely if not completely redundant, their legacy lives on in the OSGB36 map reference system still in use to this day. The building to which it is attached can be seen here [[2056573]]

The hall is available for hire. Dist:0.2km<br/>An historic 1956 Land Rover lurks behind the garden wall of a substantial property fronting on what is still the main road from Swindon to Devizes and beyond. Official records suggest it hasn't turned a wheel in over three years. The number plate is probably worth as much as the Landie.

Dist:0.4km<br/>This small stream is not named on the maps. It may well have a local name; if so I don't know it. It flows generally north to join the River Ray, which is a tributary of the Thames. The Pitchens is to the right.

Dist:0.4km<br/>Yet another pub closure is recorded here. The pub is owned by Arkell's brewery [[753002]]. The erstwhile landlords took over the pub as recently as December 2009. No explanation has been given for their departure and the future of the pub is uncertain. According to a director: “It is with regret that we have had to close the Three Tuns at Wroughton following the departure of the landlords. “As we do not have a landlord in a position to take over the pub we have boarded it up and have yet to make a firm decision about its future. It is possible that it will not be open again in the short term.” (source swindonadvertiser.co.uk) The brewery bought the pub as far back as 1889 when it was already a substantial property, with "brewhouse, stables, coach house, shed, piggeries, other out-buildings, yard, garden, half an acre of orchards and meadow land, known as Home Close". Local legend has it that a local, one Dickie Tarrant, would take his horse into the pub with him. The restricted size inside meant the horse had to leave the bar backwards. (source swindonadvertiser.co.uk who probably got it from the Arkells website) Commenting on the closure a local parish councillor has been quoted as saying: “I don’t think people will be too sad about it. We’ve got plenty of pubs in the village.” (source swindonadvertiser.co.uk)

Dist:0.4km<br/>This is another view of the former pub, now under conversion into a house. The pub holds personal memories for me and at least one other Geographer. The pub had an extensive beer garden and was a pleasant place to visit with parents in the days when children weren't allowed into pubs.

Dist:0.4km<br/>The property was public house for many years until the early 1990s or thereabouts. After that it was used for some other commercial use. It is now being converted into a house and the builders are still working on it.
