Dist:0.1km<br/>This fine building on Featherstall Road, Oldham, knew its heyday when Platt Bros. were a major player in the local engineering industry, and owned most of the surrounding area and buildings in the early 20th century. The building stood empty for a decade or more at the end of the century, and there were plans afoot to convert it into a luxury hotel. This idea never came to fruition, and it now serves as numerous small business and office units.

Dist:0.2km<br/>This is the new works of Platt Brothers & Co, established in 1842. Platts were major builders of the textile machinery that so much of Lancashire depended on and this was a large site. The office block has been illustrated by others but this floats my boat a bit more. In the left background you can see Manor mill, Chadderton. This was equipped by the rival firm of Asa Lees. My advice to budding industrial photographers is to get snapping and be snappy about it.

Those on the left are Crossbank House and Summervale House, which are high-rise accommodation blocks built in the last century to replace much of Oldham's squalid terraced housing. In the foreground is a rather unglamorous Wicks carpark.

Dist:0.4km<br/>Despite its ruinous state this is still a most imposing building. Oldham's mills make a huge impression in the landscape and they are continuing to disappear.

Dist:0.4km<br/>Listed Grade II (really). Demolition appears to be imminent. The urban explorers have been all over it and the vandals have trashed it. Built 1907 by the Hartford Mill (Oldham)Co Ltd. Extended 1920 and 1924. Closed 1959 and used by Littlewoods as a mail order warehouse until 1992. Architect was F W Dixon, there were 120,000 spindles and power was provided by a very impressive 1500 hp Urmson & Thompson engine.
