The stone stands against the wall of Dalry Cemetery. It is badly eroded, but I think it reads: Edinburgh 1 mile Glasgow 41 miles.

The building, from the 1840s, was formerly the Edinburgh Magdalene Asylum, an institution that witnessed the darker side of Edinburgh's past. Dist:0.1km<br/>Destiny Church is a contemporary church in Edinburgh that began 10 years ago in a flat in the city centre. In August 2008 they opened a second worship centre in the city, a converted 700-seat 1930s cinema in Gorgie Road. Formerly the New Tivoli, it was designed by cinema architect James McKissack, and opened in January 1934, incorporating some of the fabric of the earlier Tivoli Cinema, in particular most of the facade, which was extended upwards and eastwards. Seating was for 1200, and the plans included stage and dressing rooms. This closed as a cinema in July 1973, and from then until 2006 was a bingo hall. The 1930s sand-blasted art-deco window decorations are still visible on the exterior, and the interior retains most of its 1930s detailing. The building was B-listed by Historic Scotland in 1993.

Dist:0.1km<br/>This tombstone in what was a relatively poor working-class district of Edinburgh is testimony to the appalling mortality rate in the Victorian period, It commemorates several children who pre-deceased their parents. The inscription reads: Erected by John Thom coal merchant in memory of Robert, died 16 June 1855, aged 3 years 3 months, John, died 23 October 1859, aged 2 years 1 month, Margaret, died 6 September 1872, aged 29, Jane Miller Thom, died 10th January 1874, aged 20 and Euphemia Marr, wife, died 18 November 1881, aged 66.

Dist:0.2km<br/>What appears at first to be a mausoleum is in fact an archway containing steps connecting a lower level of the cemetery with a higher terrace - evidence of the financial resources the Victorians were willing to devote to their burial grounds.

Dist:0.2km<br/>Sorry state of Dalry Cemetery. Apparently some of the stones have been set on their sides by the council as they were dangerous. The majority seem to have been vandalised intentionally, many of the steps etc have been written on. It's a shame as it's a truly lovely spot with lots of birds.
