Dist:0.1km<br/>Gorley Common is on the plateau of Gorley Hill. This is artificial flatness - the common was quarried for its gravel in the 1950s and 60s and has only returned to open grazing land since its purchase by Hampshire County Council in the mid-1990s. The two fenced regions have a sign on them saying 'Temporary Grazing Enclosure' and unsurprisingly the grass (and red Rumex Acetosa - see [[178206]]) has grown taller within the enclosed areas.

Dist:0.2km<br/>The gravel on top of Gorley Hill was quarried away in the mid 20th century, leaving this very flat area. After the quarrying stopped the area was recolonised by gorse and grass and silver birch trees have had time to establish. The area is now owned and managed by Hampshire County Council. The line of trees in the distance are on the eastern side of Gorley Hill on the edge of the common.

Dist:0.5km<br/>This George V-reign postbox, set into a brick pillar, stands alongside a telephone box, some kind of telecoms equipment box and the village noticeboard. A pony is a typical addition in these parts, too. The postbox is emptied finally at 4pm on weekdays and at 10:30am on Saturdays.
