This open space used to be the playing fields for the Minster School, although there was always general public access as it is crossed by several footpaths.

Dist:0.1km<br/>This is the lowest part of the site, close to the Potwell Dyke stream, and the damp soil supports a fine colony of Southern Marsh Orchid, a number of whose spikes can be seen in this picture, along with particularly clover and buttercup.

Dist:0.2km<br/>One of the old established footpaths through these managed haymeadows. Walkers are encouraged to stay on the paths to ensure the preservation of the flora. In this view the predominant flower is Yellow Rattle (particularly bottom right).

Dist:0.2km<br/>This is a group of small fields owned by the Minster, now being managed as traditional hay-meadows. There is a wealth of meadow flowers, with some variety due to different habitats. This corner is low and damp and has a thriving population of Southern Marsh Orchid. Also visible here are Buttercup and Red and White Clover.

Dist:0.2km<br/>Attractive hedgerow plant in a sequence of small managed hay meadows. The hedgerows too are managed to reduce, particularly, rampant bramble growth, and restore traditional hedgerow plants of thorn (haw-, black- and buck-), dogrose, etc.

Dist:0.2km<br/>These are a series of small meadows owned by Southwell Minster which are now being managed as traditional hay meadows. They will be mown for hay after the main flowering period, allowing seeds to be retained on the ground, and then grazed by sheep. In this particular field the most abundant flower is Yellow Rattle, slightly past its best on my visit, seen here amidst avariety of grasses and plantains.

Dist:0.2km<br/>Looking across to the Minster, which owns the meadows. These meadows are being managed as traditional hay meadows and will be mown after seed ripening to allow seeds to remain on the land. They will then be grazed. There is a rich variety of flora in the meadows. A network of paths is maintained to ensure that as much of the meadow is undisturbed as possible.
