Norman's Bay Homepage


A view eastwards along the beach at Norman's Bay, so-called because it was the site where the Norman army landed in 1066 before the Battle of Hastings.

Looking at the shingle bank from the sand revealed at low tide. The shingle is built up in steps to absorb the punishment thrown at it by stormy seas and to protect both houses and farmland beyond.

At the western end of the small hamlet. There seems to be more caravans than houses here.

The road appears to access a caravan site only, but it actually continues beyond it to a variety of beach cottages and other abodes further on.

Dist:0.1km<br/>Looking along the section of the hamlet where the houses front onto the top of the shingle beach. The second house from the left is called The Tower House and is built on the site of Martello Tower number 54 that was demolished around 1911/12.

Dist:0.2km<br/>Taking the private road to the small settlement over the Coastway East line next to Normans Bay station.A train has just passed through the cars are waiting for the gates to manually opened.

Dist:0.2km<br/>Norman's Bay Station is just a halt and trains do not stop here on Sundays. At the eat end of the station is a small occupational crossing which give access to the private road that leads to the beach. Signs warn car drivers that the gates are closed for long periods and that the crossing is unmanned at night.
