Dist:0.7km<br/>Lydiard Millicent is a village north-west of the park in square SU0985. It lies just outside Swindon within the North Wiltshire District Council area.

Dist:0.7km<br/>Lydiard Park is owned by the local authority and is one of the jewels in the crown of Swindon. Centred on a large mansion, the park covers about half of this square. In this image the main landmark is the David Murray John Tower on the right of the skyline nearly 5 kilometres to the east. [[SU1484]]

Dist:0.7km<br/>The garden has been restored only recently to replicate the appearance it would probably have had in Georgian days. It is believed to have been built in the 1740s as a retreat for the St John family to take their ease and admire the flower beds and enjoy the fruit from the fruit trees. Its fortunes suffered along with those of the St Johns and it fell into a state of neglect. The estate was purchased in the 1940s for a relatively trivial sum by the then Swindon Corporation whose successor authority still own it. This image is made up of three stitched together.

The one nearest the viewpoint dates to the early 1860s and has a particularly poignant inscription [[2081845]] Note. No details are given as to how they died so young but, sadly, premature deaths weren't uncommon 150 years ago. Note.
