This spectacular double rainbow is shown over the coastal village of Newtonhill, about 10 miles south of Aberdeen. You may just be able to see the sea over the houses on the other side of the railway, although the sky and sea tend to blend together in rainy weather.

The small burn reaches the North Sea through the cobbled beach at Newtonhill Bay. A wooden footbridge takes walkers across the burn just yards above the beach.

The rocks have been rounded by wave action and show their strata in the ring patterns.

At the head of the small SE-facing bay is a stony beach which is still used by small fishing craft. The coastal fields are mainly used for barley and pasture.

Dist:0.4km north<br/>Looking south from the slopes of the Cran Hill, the rugged nature of the east coast of Scotland can be seen clearly in this photograph. The village on the headland is the lower part of Newtonhill, or perhaps Skateraw, the old name for this village. In the distance, someone with a keen eye and a good knowledge of the area might just be able to discern where the Highland Fault Line ends, near Stonehaven. I can't!
