A single-chambered, early to mid-18th century, two-storey lectern doocot. A corrugated iron roof has been placed on the roof, presumably to prevent any more damage to the building. It is sited in a plant nursery and various glass houses, sheds etc surround/adjoin the doocot. A worker in the nursery said that there are plans to renovate although no specific time-table.

Architect James Smith, 1686, Classical 2-storey and basement house, with interior work by William Adam from circa 1720; 3-bay outer pavilions, linking bays and further interior alterations, probably also William Adam, from 1720. James Smith built Whitehill for himself, but sold it in 1702 to Lord Bellenden. In 1709 it was purchased by Sir David Dalrymple, owner of the Hailes Estate, who renamed the house. Together with his son, James, he was responsible for the additions planned before his death in 1721; as William Adam worked on the interior refurbishment, it seems possible that he was the architect of the pavilions.

Dist:0.1km<br/>As seen from the southeast. Built around 1686, it was bought by Sir David Dalrymple in 1707. Dalrymple renamed the property Newhailes, after his ruined Hailes Castle (near East Linton). The last of the line, Sir Mark Dalrymple, died in 1971 and in lieu of death duties, the contents of the great library were removed to the National Library of Scotland. In 1997, the house was given to the National Trust for Scotland by his wife Lady Antonia Dalrymple because the cost of upkeep had become impossible and the house was in danger of falling into disrepair. Now, restoration is ongoing with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Historic Scotland and the NTS, and the intention is to return the magnificent collection of books to their rightful place in the library once restoration is complete.

Dist:0.2km<br/>A monument to Sir John Dalrymple, 2nd earl of Stair (1673-1746), hero of the Battle of Dettingen in the War of the Austrian Succession. His family had bought Whitehill House in 1709 and renamed it after the family estate at Hailes in East Lothian, hence New Hailes. [[2684671]]

Dist:0.2km<br/>The rear of the house in the late afternoon in autumn. Originally known as Whitehill House, it was built by the architect James Smith who bought the land in 1686. Having trained as a priest at Rome, he decided he was not cut out for that vocation and went on to demonstrate the fact by fathering 32 children to two wives. His best known works are the Canongate Kirk and Dalkeith House. In 1709, the house was bought by Sir David Dalrymple, Lord Advocate, who renamed it New Hailes. Banished to Holland for accidentally killing his older brother at the age of eight, he began his military career as an officer in the Prince of Orange's Anglo-Scots Brigade and accompanied 'Dutch William' to Britain in 1688. A leading anti-Jacobite, he was one of the 16 members chosen to represent Scotland in the new Parliament of Great Britain after the 1707 Act of Union.
