Dist:0.3km<br/>Newchapel is a village near Kidsgrove on the Staffordshire / Cheshire border. The Church of St. James is where the well known canal engineer James Brindley who lived locally, was buried in Sept. 1772.

Dist:0.8km<br/>To the left where the modern houses are there used to be the Birchenwood Works which extracted the by-products from coal (gas, benzine, tar etc.)and was a great pollutant of the surrounding district. It shut down in the 1960's and has been turned into a housing development and country park.

Dist:1.0km<br/>The school was built in 1879 as the Harriseahead Board Schools and is still in use as a primary school retaining the original facade though there has been considerable rebuilding at the rear.

Behind are the Old Tips of Victoria Colliery, which closed in 8/82.

Dist:1.5km southeast<br/>Stoke-on-Trent has many miles of "Greenways", public paths or open spaces following the routes of the now disused railway lines that used to run between the many coal mines, iron works and major potteries. Here at the northern end of the city, near the Chatterley Whitfield mine (now a museum) the greenway crosses the A527.

Dist:1.6km east<br/>Looking down across Brindley Meadow to the rooftops of the houses in Brindley Ford. The 11.8 hectare Brindley Meadow started life in the 19th century as a sandstone quarry known as Knypersley Quarry. In later years it became a dumping ground for slag from a nearby foundry and for shale from local mining activities, this was to continue until the site was abandoned and left derelict in the 1960’s. In the mid-1990’s a development company, Banks Group ( http://www.banksgroup.co.uk/ ), became involved and applied for, and secured, planning permission to reclaim the quarry. This involved the extraction of coal from underneath the quarry between 1997 and 1999 and the tipping of 250,000 tonnes of inert material into the quarry between 2000 and 2002, with the final reclamation finished in the same year. Approximately 50% of the site is planted with trees to create woodland, the rest with wildflowers and shrubs.
