Dist:0.5km<br/>Stately home, turned residential adult college, on the site of a Cistercian monastery built on lands granted by King David I in the 12th century. The monks were the earliest recorded pioneers of coalmining in Scotland, both at Newbattle and at Prestonpans where coal was used to produce sea-salt by evaporating sea-water in large metal pans.
