This short stretch still in water runs from inside the now deserted Stanton Ironworks site to the A6096 Ilkeston to Derby road, just east of Kirk Hallam. It would appear that at time of closure the lock gates were replaced by a weir, with a circular sluice.

Dist:0.1km<br/>The Nutbrook Canal ceased to be used for carrying in the late 19th century, and although over some stretches there is water, this road bridge has been converted to a culvert as if to emphasise that there is no hope of navigating.

Dist:0.1km<br/>Looking east from Stanton Bridge, the Nutbrook Canal appears as though it might be navigable; it is in fact very shallow and inaccessible by boat, the old connection to the Erewash Canal by Stanton Lock having disappeared many years ago.

Quarry Hill Industrial Estate is behind the trees on the right and the disused Nutbrook Canal and the now wooded brownfield site of the Stanton Ironworks is to the left. Straight ahead the trail heads towards Kirk Hallam and Ilkeston.

Dist:0.2km<br/>The Nutbrook Canal was opened in 1795 to provide a transport route for collieries to the west of Ilkeston. It joined the Erewash Canal near Stanton Lock. However, badly affected by mining subsidence, it had fallen into disuse as early as 1895. Although it appears as though it might be navigable here, just beyond the bend its course through the former Stanton Ironworks has been completely obliterated.

Dist:0.2km<br/>This is an access footpath to the Nutbrook Trail. Walk up here and you leave the peace of the trail behind and re-enter the busy world. The Nut Brook passes under the path just past the black and white posts.
