Iron & steel works once dominated this area. The site has been taken over by a number of businesses - including a waste disposal company which sorts rubbish out behind the nets on the right.

Dist:0.1km<br/>There are only two pubs actually on the Flight nowadays. They are both near the top of the locks. Too soon for those coming down, and too late for those coming up. Here the Commercial Inn is seen from Lock 19.

Dist:0.1km<br/>It was too wet to claim the excuse of being parched for turning into the Kirkless Arms pub beside the lock, out of sight behind the trees.

Dist:0.1km<br/>Lock 73 is dominated by the slag heap of the former iron and steel works. Tubs were pushed along tracks atop the tip and their contents tumbled down the slope - often retaining the circular shape of the tub - an example being on the right-hand slope.

Dist:0.2km<br/>Lock 69 from the side of Kirkless Hall Bridge. The locks are closed to navigation throughout most of the winter, during which one or other of the 21 locks is usually receiving attention - new gates, for instance. British Waterways staff keep an eye on things in the meantime.
