The statue of Sam Bartram proudly standing outside The Valley, Charlton Athletic's ground. Sam Bartram played in goal for Charlton for 22 years and was one of their finest players. He once played in a match where it was so foggy that he was still standing guarding his goal when all the rest of the players had gone because the match had been abandoned. Eventually a policeman found him and told Sam what had happened.

Dist:0.3km north<br/>This signal box adjacent to an AFB (automatic full barrier) level crossing on Charlton Lane is still staffed at busy times, but remotely controlled (presumably from the London Bridge control centre) at less busy times. Waiting times can be quite long as the practice is to close the barriers before trains leave Charlton station (800m west) or Woolwich Dockyard (1100m east) although there are intermediate signals.

Dist:0.4km north<br/>Nine months on from Stephen's [[489217]] and the pub, with its carved eagle over the entrance door, still exists. Truman Hanbury and Buxton's brewery was the Black Eagle in Spitalfields, and their beers were named after it, as evidenced by the sign on the right side of the building. The brewery was one of the oldest in London, having been acquired by Joseph Truman in 1698. The Truman Hanbury and Buxton name eventually disappeared when they merged with Watney Mann in 1974, the latter having been bought themselves by Grand Metropolitan Hotels in 1972. The pub, which is at 757 Woolwich Road, is under threat but it is to be hoped that it can be incorporated into whatever is subsequently built on the site.

Dist:0.4km north<br/>This is a disused sand quarry, worked from Roman times until the early 20th century for its high quality fine sand used in glassmaking. It is now a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) because the exposed quarry face in the distance (before it became overgrown with trees) yielded a 'textbook example' of a geological sequence of chalk, sands and gravels from 70-55 million years ago, with several fossil finds including sharks and crocodiles. There is with a public footpath running across it, marked by the line of footprints in the snow.
