Looking from the summit of the hill towards Napier University's Craiglockhart Campus. The oldest part of the Campus was built in 1877 as the Craiglockhart Hydropathic Institution. During World War One it was requisitioned by the army as a war hospital and it was in this building that in 1917 War Poets Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen met. Sadly Owen did not survive the War but Sassoon at the Wars end published both his own and Owens War Poems. The monstrous modern extension caused quite a bit of consternation when it was being planned and constructed.

Once a hospital, Craighouse is now part of Napier University. There is a big hatch of hawthorn flies (Bibio). No water here, but these flies tend to start up a feeding frenzy in trout.

Dist:0.2km<br/>The memorial lists Burton's achievements as the first Professor of Sanitary Engineering at the Imperial University of Tokyo where he was sole consultant for the design of water systems for Japan's major cities. He is also accredited with designing Japan's first skyscraper in Tokyo and introducing photography to the country.

One of its later residents was the historian John Hill Burton, whose son was a pioneer of the West's cultural contact with Japan. [[2009605]]

The building changes colour with the weather, as changing humidity causes the traditional lime rendering, incorporating ox blood and horse hair, to alter its shade. It is said to be haunted by a spectre known as 'the Green Lady'.

Dist:0.2km<br/>Napier is the nearest Scotland has produced to a 'Renaissance Man', at least as far as mathematics and the sciences are concerned. The historian Christopher Smout has listed his achievements as including "a new type of screw-drainage for coal mines", "the use of salt as an agricultural fertiliser", "military burning glasses" and "self-propelled armoured chariots like tanks". His enduring fame rests on his 'discovery' of logarithms in 1614 which propelled him into the front rank of European scientists alongside his contemporaries Kepler and Tycho Brahe. Smout explains that "This epoch-making discovery, coming like an illuminating mathematical flash over European science, provided for the seventeenth century a tool of the same kind of importance as the invention of computers did for the twentieth century: an incalculable aid to rapid computation. (...) 'Napier bones', made out of rods of ivory, represented the first attempt to construct a calculating machine other than the ancient abacus." -- Smout, A History Of The Scottish People, 1560-1830
