On the east wall of the bridge is this original stone tablet. The names are slightly worn but seem to be: Will. Withers Clerk. Nicholas Fenwick Esq. Mr Tho. Nicholson. Supervisors 1735 There is another plaque on the opposite wall which is covered in moss and much harder to read. The bridge was re-widened in 1968 when, presumably, the two plaques were re-set in their current positions.

Dist:0.4km<br/>In the 13th century, the estate was owned by the De Burgh family, before passing to the Tunstalls of nearby Thurland Castle http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1992557. Sold in the early 1600s to the royalist Girlington family, the estate was later confiscated and passed on to a Parliamentarian officer who built the first house on the site; in 1690, it was bought by John Fenwick, a lawyer from Northumberland. In 1740, Robert Fenwick, Attorney General and MP for Lancaster commissioned the architect Westby Gill to rebuild the house in its present form. The hall sits on the site of the Roman fort of Calacum.
