Dist:0.1km<br/>Holmwood Common is woodland on clay. The area proved relatively difficult to cultivate otherwise, and so was left to grow native species in earlier centuries. After industrialisation, part of the area was used to extract clay for a brickworks on the site, but all signs of that have now gone. The picture shows the typical nature of the woodland on the common. This was taken at the start of an orienteering event.

Dist:0.3km<br/>The old road forms a loop off the A24 through the settlement around Holmwood station, and at its northern end a dead-end spur remains. On the right is a recycling bay, now disused. Why the sign remains and points into the hedge is obscure.

Dist:0.6km<br/>Landmark cross on the east side of the busy A24. The memorial is separated from the village by this dual carriageway which is in the dip beyond the memorial.

Dist:0.6km<br/>Part of the ancient Manor of Dorking, Holmwood Common was owned by King Harold before the Norman Conquest. Until the 19th-century the common was woodland. This changed when commoners began to use it for turf, timber and grazing, slowly transforming it into wood pasture. Some ancient oaks still survive today - almost 200 years on. In the 1920s commoning began to dwindle and the grassland returned to woodland.

Dist:0.7km<br/>Footpath FP264 follows the field boundary to the right, around East Lodge, through Betchetsgreen Copse to Anstiebury Farm assuming, of course, that you make it through the mud. Redlands Lodge can be seen on the far side of the field.
