Dist:0.6km<br/>Disused 1950s vintage coke works. The battery, seen here, was on the opposite side of the road to the boosters and exhausters and I believe that drops them one grid square south. The coal bunker is extreme left and the gas mains cross the road to the right. The coke pusher is centre below the chimney. The chimney acts as the exhaust for the battery heating as the ovens are externally heated to carbonise the coal.

Dist:0.7km<br/>Clarke, Chapman & Co of Gateshead inverted vertical compound engine. Vee belt drive to a compressor. Scrapped 1988/9. Was quite rare as Clarke, Chapman are better known for their steam winches, especially for shipboard use.

Dist:0.7km<br/>Not your usual domestic prepayment gas meter! A W C Holmes "Connersville" meter. Effectively a Roots blower in reverse with the gas flow turning the rotors and driving a precise metering mechanism. This was at the now demolished Hawthorn Coking Works, Murton.

Dist:0.7km<br/>There are a row of three gas compressors for boosting the gas to storage and distribution. The two farthest away are driven by electric motors in a sealed room behind the facing wall on the right. (All fittings are flame-proof or sealed away. The compressor nearest is direct coupled to a Belliss & Morcom steam engine (widget on the right). This was built in 1958 and was of 428 BHP. The vertical cylinders on the left are gas/water aftercoolers. The compressors and steam engine were built by Belliss & Morcom in Birmingham.

Dist:0.7km<br/>These steam turbine driven exhausters pulled the gas off the coke oven batteries. This side of the plant was just like a traditional town gas plant. The plant closed in 1984 and was demolished in 1989. It was past its best when I visited.
