Dist:0.2km<br/>The nearer body of water is Whinhill Reservoir (with the Firth of Clyde visible in the background). The photograph was taken from the side of Old Largs Road, through a gap in the hedge; between the photographer's position and the reservoir is the course of Greenock Whinhill Golf Club: [[440766]]. The reservoir is sometimes referred to by the older name of Beith's Dam*. It collapsed on November 21, 1835; a huge wave swept downhill, carrying great quantities of rubble with it, and resulting in the death of forty residents of Cartsdyke (now an area of Greenock, it was, at that time, a separate village). The dam had previously burst its banks in March, 1815. [(*) The spelling "Beath's Dam" is found just as frequently; however, the road adjacent to the dam is definitely signposted as "Beith Road" (see [[1471645]]), so I've used that spelling here.]
