This pub is opposite Mortimer Common, which would have been where the animals from the original village, Stratfield Mortimer, would have been brought to graze. The pub looks to date from the 1920s. Unusually the pub sign is on the opposite side of the road.

Although Mortimer Common is now the largest of the three settlements, it did not start to grow rapidly until the 1870s. This church dates from that time, although it is only just over a kilometre from St. Mary's church Stratfield Mortimer which itself was rebuilt in 1869. Just to the left is a parochial junior school of the same name.

Dist:0.2km<br/>The memorial is a little way from the church, at the east end of the village. I speculate that this is because it is a joint memorial with the original village of Stratfield Mortimer to the east.
