Dist:0.9km east<br/>Haig Homes provides rental housing for ex-Service people, and was established as a Charitable Trust in 1929 as a memorial to Field Marshal Earl Haig in recognition of his work to highlight and solve many problems facing ex-Service people and their families. He was particularly concerned with the plight of those disabled during their service in theatres of War and the difficulties created by this in their civilian lives. Haig Homes has over 1,300 houses, flats, maisonettes and bungalows throughout the UK, but this site at Morden is their largest with over 270 properties http://www.haighomes.org.uk/home.htm

Dist:0.9km west<br/>This is the main entrance to Battersea New Cemetery, off Lower Morden Lane, which was opened in 1891, presumably as space was used up in cemeteries nearer the centre of London. It is still managed by Wandsworth Borough Council. Dist:1.0km east<br/>An island platform and a small waiting room are the minimalist facilities that are available at this station on London's extensive southern suburban network. On weekdays there is a half-hourly service of trains to Wimbledon with connections to main line services. A journey to London Waterloo is scheduled at 35 minutes. The station is named after the St Helier inner London overspill housing estate built in the vicinity between 1928 and 1936; the estate itself was named in honour of Lady St Helier, who was a London County Council Alderman between 1910 and 1927.

Dist:1.0km west<br/>Pyl Brook flows beyond the embankment in the distance but in front of the distant houses, which are on Derwent Road. The embankment has a couple of low sections and during a flood event the water spills over these, out of the brook, and begins to fill up the flood storage area in the foreground. At the downstream end of the pond are [[690798]] which allow the stored flood water to gradually rejoin the brook as the flood subsides. This is also the Derwent Floodwash Local Nature Reserve and the boardwalk and platform (fenced area just to the left of the tree), next to the small marshy area and pond on the left, were built to enable local school pupils to use the site as an outdoor classroom for environmental education.

Dist:1.1km west<br/>A penstock is a sluice or gate that controls the flow of water. During a flood event these penstock gates, seen from within [[690771]], would allow stored flood water to gradually rejoin Pyl Brook, which is flowing on the other side of the embankment.
