This is London Road, Mitcham. The actual cricket field is over to the right and has a very long association with the game. On the road, a DMS bus (they were then new in service) waits in front of a pair of Routemasters.

An E.M.U. at Mitcham Railway Station. I searched my London Streetfinder in vain trying to find this Station. However I noticed a Mitcham Stop on the Tramway. Would I be right in assuming that the latter has taken over the route of the former? The London Road, A217, passes over the bridge in the background.

Dist:0.1km<br/>Also known as the Lower Green, the Cricket Green at Mitcham was part of the common or grazing land of medieval times which largely escaped enclosure in the 18th and 19th centuries. Cricket has been played on The Cricket Green since the early 18th century, making it one of the oldest cricket greens in the world. One hundred years later, Lord Nelson and Lady Hamilton used to come here from Merton to watch the sport. The houses on the far side are on the road called Cricket Green.

Dist:0.1km<br/>Difficult to photograph across a busy road, and I did not notice that the clock had stopped; this photograph was taken in the afternoon. Whether it still happens, I don't know, but during a match, the batsmen used to wait in the clubhouse and watch the match from the balcony. At the fall of a wicket, the new batsman could be seen crossing the road to the cricket square directly opposite.

They were provided by Miss Tate to accommodate twelve poor widows or spinsters on a site occupied by her family in the 18th century. Her coat of arms appear on the central gable. The almshouses were renovated in 1990 and now provide seven homes.
