Mirfield Homepage


Mirfield railway station has an unusual arrangement following track rationalisation some years ago. The original station had a single island platform (from which this photo was taken) west of Station Road; but the track in the foreground is now only used for freight rather than westbound passenger trains. Stopping westbound trains now use the new platform 3 seen here, staggered to the east of the road bridge. This is a stopping service to Manchester Victoria via Hebden Bridge.

Beside the Calder Valley main line just east of Mirfield, on shunting work is ex-L&Y No. 51424: one of 230 built 1876-87 by Barton Wright as 0-6-0 tender engine, rebuilt in the 1890s by Aspinall as saddle-tank; this one survived until 10/58. [What were the Works behind?]

This class 170 Turbostar diesel passing through Mirfield would probably have been on a Manchester Piccadilly to Hull working.
