Dist:0.2km<br/>Prior to the Reformation this was a very common inn sign, for it was the emblem of St Peter. When Henry VIII broke with Rome a number of signs changed to the King's Head. Later the keys had a significance when watchmen kept guard throughout the night on behalf of the community.

The arrival of Hackney carriages, forerunners of modern taxis, and later the introduction of stage coaches meant that there was plenty of traffic on the roads. Inns were natural stopping places, providing refreshment for both horses and humans.

Dist:0.3km<br/>Very icy pavements - rain is falling on frozen ground at the end of a long period of frost. The temperature is rising it was freezing point here, but a few minutes later at Lancaster five degrees above. Frost set in again the following evening.
