An almost rural setting for this lock which is less than 2 miles from Canary Wharf. The lock-keepers cottage in the centre is now surrounded by the modern buildings of Queen Mary College.

Situated in Eric Street off the A11 Mile End Road, this TE serves Bow and Mile End. It used to have ADVance telephone numbers until the late 1960s. Now it has 0208-980 and 981 numbers, plus some other Outer London numbers. Its postcode is E3 4SP.

Seen from the Green Bridge, Mile End Road stretches out to the east with Mile End Underground station on the right. The junction in the foreground is with Grove Road and Burdett Road. The name Mile End refers to the first milestone out of London, but of course the story is more complicated than that and a history of the district is give here: http://www.mernick.org.uk//thhol/mileend.html

Historic pub in Mile End Road built in 1821 and still surmounted by a globe. (There is an Old Globe further along the road which presumably pre-dates it.) It was originally the site of the New Globe Pleasure Gardens. Beyond can be seen the RC church of the Guardian Angels and the Green Bridge pedestrian/cycle path across the busy Mile End thoroughfare.
