Dist:0.4km<br/>The public footpath is well signposted from the village past the house, but then a yellow arrow indicates a direct line across the field in the foreground. Having been brought up always to walk round the edges of fields, this is the line your photographer took, avoiding a very muddy route across. There was still an unpleasantly muddy climb up to reach the next signposted bit of path.

Dist:0.5km<br/>Low lying farmland next to the River Tees, which is hidden behind trees. The large Victorian house on the far bank is at Middleton Low Row, and was no doubt built there so the owners could enjoy the view into Yorkshire.

Dist:0.5km<br/>This photo looks almost diagonally across the square. On the horizon and lower right you can see the landing lights at the SW end of the runway. There's a light aircraft near the top of the image that's taken off from the flying school based at the airfield. The line of trees/bushes is where the river Tees flows If you look carefully on the horizon to the left there is the aerial tower and just to its right is the windsock. Also on the right of the image you can just see steam coming from the Elementis Chromium plant at Urlay Nook [[28886]]

Dist:0.6km<br/>A lot of buildings in the area seem to date from the 1860's and 1870's, with nothing obviously between Victorian and modern. This large house falls firmly into the latter category (parts were still a building site on Google maps available when the photo was taken). The area seems to have become a dormitory area for nearby Teesside, with a lot of agricultural activity changing to a more equestrian emphasis.

Dist:0.7km<br/>A variety of wild flowers are confronted on the long distance footpath at this juncture, including enormous examples of the Giant Hogweed whose sap causes a nasty reaction when in contact with the skin.

Dist:0.8km<br/>The village is arranged in a line beside a road, rather like a sea front - except they overlook a bank that drops steeply down to woodland that conceals the River Tees.
