Dist:0.2km north<br/>The bridge takes the A656 north to the M1 at Garforth. The crewman on the bows of Eskdale will keep a lookout at the junction ahead, this is a very tight turn. At the time this photo was taken they were probably heading to Leeds for unloading. Since then a new wharf has been built near Allerton Bywater.

Dist:0.2km north<br/>The point where the river Aire (flowing centre right to centre left) is joined by the Calder (coming in between the trees toward the left) and the Castleford Cut of the Aire & Calder Navigation system branches off (bottom) - in effect a waterways crossroads. After almost 24 hours of torrential rain farther up the course of both rivers, the water was around 10 feet higher than usual: in the past couple of years almost as common an occurrence in summer as winter.

Dist:0.2km north<br/>The romantically-named tug 'Little Shuva' pushes a compartment barge of gravel out of Castleford Junction lock and heads for the River Calder. The gravel comes from pits on the River Trent around Newark and is probably destined for a depot at Fairies Hill, Whitwood, a couple of miles upstream from here.
