Much of the Penn Fields area was developed in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Most corners had a shop on, and some of these are used as such even now, this being a multi-ethnic community in which small mini-markets and general stores are frequently found. These solid terraced houses have been well maintained and upgraded. New roofing (minus chimney stacks when central heating has been installed) is on many of them. This image of the Lea Road is by the junction with Lonsdale Road. Lea Road does have a bus route on it.

Dist:0.2km<br/>Looking from the crossroads at Burleigh Road towards Lea Road and Oaklands Road. Owen Road and the roads radiating at this junction are now a 20 mph zone with various ridges and bumps on the road surface designed to reduce traffic speed.

Dist:0.2km<br/>This shows the extended corner shop at the junction with Owen Road. The short bell shaped tower is an architectural oddity among these late Victorian and early 20th century terraced shops and houses.

Dist:0.2km<br/>On the corner of Manlove Street and Dalton Street. In this area of late Victorian terraced housing and corner shops, roads meet at the crossroads her from five directions. Corner shops include a laundrette, an Asian foodstore, and Franco International, British Hairdressing Champion 2009-2010. (Franco's is also a Ladies' Hair Stylist offering Unisex hair design, and there is a beauty salon upstairs - I haven't tried that yet!). He's also got a salon in Wombourne! [[1092676]]

Dist:0.2km<br/>The housing all around is predominantly solid late Victorian and early 20th century, much of it terraced. Here the junction has five ways and the view is straight up Manlove Street from Owen Road (continuing to the left). Some of the old corner shops in the area have closed but many others remain, now operated by a multi-cultural population. Some regeneration has been attempted by introducing many speed humps, a 20mph speed restriction, and attractively block paving the roads at the junction, giving a real urban village feel to the site. There is still a very useful launderette here*, and that has been a dying "species" for years. (See a picture from 2008 taken in full sun http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1092682) * This launderette is partly an extension onto the original corner building. It also provides key cutting services and sells locks, paint brushes, tools and Duracell batteries!
