Dist:0.7km<br/>This halt on the Watford Junction - St Albans Abbey branch (invariably known as the 'Abbey' to railway people) was first opened in 1966 to serve an expanding district of Watford. This was unusual in a period when the emphasis was on rationalisation and closure of the railway network, and in fact the branch had been listed for closure in the infamous Beeching Report published only three years earlier.

Dist:0.7km<br/>The sign shows the exit for Junction 5. This junction was the original southern end of the motorway as opened in November 1959. It was only extended southwards in 1966.

Dist:0.8km<br/>The southern end of the M1's original section between today's junctions 5 and 18, dating from November 1959. Although not the first UK motorway (the M6 Preston bypass was earlier), this was the first long-distance section and the first to be built from the start with three lanes in each direction. Though much changed since its inception, the M1 remains a talisman for Britain of the 1960s. It would take another 50 years before the UK's motorway was substantially complete. The UK has never caught up with the great motorway building programmes of France and Germany, to the economy's disadvantage.
