Dist:0.2km<br/>A view of the ground beyond the trees from which the Jacobite Army made its 'Highland charge' at dawn against the government troops. The Jacobites had been expected to appear directly south of the redcoat lines, but had crossed a bog in the early hours to take up position west of Seton House. The element of surprise thus achieved caused panic in the government ranks as their commanders tried to effect a 90 degree turn to face the oncoming rush of clansmen. The result was less a battle, more a panic-stricken rout that lasted under ten minutes. Dist:0.2km<br/>Looking uphill along the trackbed of one of the world's oldest railways dating back to 1722. It was used to export coal from Cockenzie harbour, using horse drawn waggons on wooden rails. A modern railway nearby brings coal into Cockenzie today, but to feed the power station. This is the site of the Battle of Prestonpans (1745) and it has been said that the first use of a railway in warfare occurred here.

Loaded at Blindwells open cast loading point seen behind the train, it will make the very short journey to discharge at Cockenzie Power station just a mile or so away.Since this picture was taken this loading point has closed and trains are no longer loaded here.No doubt the Millerhill based crew were eager to get done this being a Saturday morning turn. The main East Coast railway is seen to the leftwith the a198 road behind.

Dist:0.4km<br/>Site of the Battle of Prestonpans, 1745. A Jacobite flag flies nearby. Not the main access to Seton West Mains but the road goes there. The nearest public footpath is near Berwick, but this is a core path which has a similar function, but none of the archaic nonsense associated with the English system - you can ride a bike along it for a start, and elsewhere too under the correct circumstances. I am unsure as to the validity of the no dogs bit, is it legal to forbid access to core paths to dog walkers?
