According to the excellent 20p visitors' leaflet, before the introduction of tombstones in the seventeenth century, this cross may have identified that the ground was hallowed and suitable for burials.

In the early years the services were probably taken by a priest from that abbey, but the church has had its own vicar from at least 1284.
The south porch dates from the 15th or 16th century.

The large block of stone opposite the entrance to the porch is the base of the churchyard cross.
Before tombstones were introduced in the seventeenth century the cross
identified hallowed ground, suitable for burials.
The yew tree has a girth of over 22 feet and is thought to be 900 years old - an emblem of immortality.

The eagle represents St John because of his lofty and "soaring" gospel.

The carvings include reference to the four gospel saints.
