Dist:0.3km<br/>Opposite the Moby Dick pub on a cul-de-sac off Rose Lane called Hatch Grove is Highview House - quite an appropriate name if you live on the upper floors! As you can see, there is also a pleasant green in the vicinity, which is a refreshing change to see around a London towerblock. A little way back along the Eastern Avenue is also a large pond on the green, which also adds to the rural scenery - there is countryside just past the Moby Dick on both sides of the Eastern Avenue, showing just how rural this part of London is.

Dist:0.5km<br/>The original image resides in an album that was my paternal grandfather's: George W Baker and therefore he might have photographed the mill in its last days. The discussion I added to http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1655097 states that the structure of the mill was considered unsafe soon after 1921 when all but the brick base was demolished.

Dist:0.5km<br/>The farm was home to three generations of the Drake family which managed a windmill that was close by. This was demolished in the early 1920s. In 1997, the site was being used as a car/van holding area.

Dist:0.9km<br/>Along the Eastern Avenue, in the Newton Industrial Estate just before you pass Woodcraft Conservatories, this (badly leaning) concrete lamp post with Philips SGS203 lantern can be seen. It looks as if the fence is the only thing preventing the lamp post from falling onto that house! I can't really see why this lamp post is here to be honest, as a floodlight has been fitted onto it, clearly meaning that the lamp post doesn't work any more. A thing which strikes me as weird with regards to the gazetteer information is that it says it is 3km from Collier Row. Why not just say something more well known among motorists, like Little Heath?

Dist:0.9km<br/>A long narrow pond, for the benefit of those in the housing estate north of the A12. Also for the benefit of water fowl. A coot is nesting on the twig island in the middle.

Dist:1.0km<br/>This concrete structure in the river is a flume with a narrower section at its upstream end, designed to constrict the flow of water in a flood event. When a flood occurs water backs up behind the constriction and overtops a low section of bank further upstream, flowing into a large flood storage hollow set aside for that purpose next to the river. The flood water is then let down in manageable quantities through residential areas downstream.
