In spite of its name, this small town is in the County of Perth, not the County of Angus.

Dist:0.3km<br/>Cistercian Cupar Abbey was founded by King Malcolm IV in the 12th. century before becoming one of the most important monasteries in Scotland. Note the spelling - Cupar. In the 17th. century the area was known as Coupin but there was still confusion with the Angus town and Cupar in Fife. Finally the town was renamed Couper Angus to distinguish it from its Fife namesake.

Dist:0.4km<br/>This watch house was built in 1822 as a shelter for those guarding newly buried corpses against the activities of grave-robbers. Human corpses were in great demand at that time for use in anatomy schools.

Dist:0.4km<br/>Thorn Alley, a right of way, comprises of a raised, grassy linear mound and may well mark a Roman camp. Tradition also claims it to delineate the eastern boundary of the abbey precinct, but this was possibly further west, on the banks of the Couper Burn.

Dist:0.4km<br/>The Steeple, or tolbooth tower, was built by public subscription in 1762 and completed in 1796. The Steeple was to serve as a gaol on the ground floor and as a meeting house for local courts on the upper floor. Although a partial ruin, much of the original Steeple remains.

Dist:0.5km<br/>This lane was named after a candle factory which was situated here. The building still stands and stones from the abbey can be seen in its fabric. The abbey mill also stood nearby, drawing water from the Couper Burn.

Dist:0.5km<br/>The bench mark is to be found on the north east angle of The Steeple [[401945]] and http://www.bench-marks.org.uk/bm34280 A bench mark is an Ordnance Survey arrowhead sign found on walls, bridges, churches and specially erected triangulation pillars where the altitude above sea-level has been accurately measured by surveyors. The arrowhead points to a horizontal line above it which marks the exact altitude. With rivets and pivots there is no datum (horizontal line) cut, the pointed-to horizontal surface defining the datum height.
