Lower Swainswick Homepage


This grassy glade in the southern suburbs of Bath marks the spot where the northern portal of the Somerset & Dorset Railway's Devonshire Tunnel once stood. It has now been buried by infilling the approach cutting. In the middle of the picture is a manhole which gives access to it so that occasional inspections can be carried out.

Dist:0.3km<br/>About 200 yards south of [[[905949]]] Bloomfield Road leaves Wellsway to the right. Anyone walking or cycling this way would be well advised to take this as an alternative route to Odd Down, it is safer, more interesting and adds very little distance.

Dist:0.4km<br/>My dictionaries define an avenue as a wide street, often lined with trees. Bloomfield Avenue, on the other hand, is a rather narrow road that winds round in a loop, although there are some trees around. This is where the loop rejoins itself.

Dist:0.5km<br/>Bear Flat gives a short but welcome relief to travellers on the A367 out of Bath on the way to Wells. Starting at the southern end of Southgate Street the A367 climbs the hill as Wells Road then on turning the corner seen here onto Bear Flat it becomes Wellsway.

Dist:0.6km<br/>An open space in the foreground with a school at the bottom of the hill, the playing field is being prepared for sports day. In the background we find the gasholders between East Twerton and Locksbrook while Beckford's Tower ST7367 overlooks them all to see fair play.

Dist:0.6km<br/>Turning clockwise from [[[896092]]] Chantry Mead is in the foreground. The centre of Bath is in the middle of the frame, further over and slightly to the right Little Solsbury Hill ST7667 appears. Left from there we have part of Charmy Down then the slope up to Lansdown. St.Stephen's Church, sans scaffolding, is there but not easily seen.
