This bridge crosses the River Eye in the centre of this well-known Cotswold village. The unusual name 'Slaughter' is of uncertain origin; it appears as 'Sclostre' in the Domesday Book and may be derived from an Old English word meaning 'muddy place'. An alternative theory is that the name is a corruption of 'Sloitre' - after Philip de Sloitre a Norman knight who held land in the district.

Get there early, be lucky and you may get a picture of the River Eye flowing through Lower Slaughter without a single person in it! This view is looking south east from the central bridge with the church out of frame to the left.

Although the old ford (left) could be considered redundant now, the same could not be said of the stone footbridge which makes crossing the River Eye very pleasant on a summer's day.
