Between Rodley and Kirkstall on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.

Looking west towards the bridge, built 1819, which connects Newlane Lane on the north (Horsforth) side, to Pollard Lane on the south (Newlay & Bramley) side.

Looking South across the bridge, which is one of the oldest iron bridges in Britain, and probably the oldest in Yorkshire.

There was a large dyeworks here, but by 2000 it had been empty and become derelict. Demolition started before this photo of the front was taken, and very little is left now. Planning permission has been granted for housing on the site, which lies between the River Aire and the Leeds Liverpool Canal, beside Pollard Lane.

The outbuildings house a cattery and cat rescue centre (where we got one of our cats).

The demolition is now nearly finished, making way for a large housing development.

A willow hide at Rodley Nature Reserve overlooking one of the lagoons on this converted sewage farm. It was not clear whether the willow was alive and would grow to provide more cover. There are other, more conventional hides on the reserve.

A former sewage treatment works, this reserve has been designed to provide a wetland habitat for migrating waders and wildfowl. The habitat at the time of the picture was more suitable for skaters than waders.

There has been a weir here for many years. It was constructed to divert some of the water into the Kirstall Forge Goit, the remains of which can still be seen to the north of the river.

Although not one of the very first, this iron bridge by John Pollard remains an excellent early example of the type. Now closed to motor traffic, it is still open to (and very well used by) pedestrians and cyclists.

The developer's sign nearby says this house will be one of "Five large 5/6 bedroom family homes of distinction - good sized gardens - flexible accommodation - very comprehensive specification - luxury fittings and fixtures". Looking at the overall size of the site, I wonder how they will achieve all of this!

Rodley Nature Reserve is a wetland area built on a former sewage works on the banks of the River Aire. It is supported, amongst other organizations, by The Wildfowl and Wetland Trust.
