Taken at Hauxley Nature Reserve on a cold grey day, the bright green shoots of the Flag Iris promised Spring not far away.

Yet another reserve created from former mining works. Owned and run by Northumberland Wildlife Trust this is a great place to see wildlife from dragonflies to Geese. The main hide can be seen on the right which is a large comfortable building with excellent views across the lake, a warden and toilet facilities. There are several hides around the lake and small ponds with a great diversity of birdlife on view.

The building is the visitor centre and "Reception" hide, but alas the facilities described in [[138890]] are no longer available. The building was destroyed by fire by vandals in June 2010. There are plans to rebuild the centre in the autumn of 2012.
