Dist:0.5km<br/>A large chalet by the left bank of the River Eden below Baron Wood, on the inside of a big bend facing a long wall of sandstone cliffs (behind the photographer). This one does seem to have the ideal location for sitting out in the evening with a beer or three, barbecuing your day's catch. Passing paddlers are working fairly hard at this point (at least in this sort of water level) as this is one of the flatter sections of the River Eden descent from Lazonby to Armathwaite.

Dist:0.6km<br/>Used for orienteering for the first time 30/3/08. The control is in a gully on the undulating upper plateau of the wood. Beyond, there is a steep rocky scarp slope running down to the River Eden. The wood is managed by the Forestry Commission.

Dist:0.7km<br/>After heading north with cliffs on the left, this placid section of the River Eden approaches a big left hand bend, with cliffs ahead river right, below Coombshead. This is a fairly low water level, so we were having to paddle rather than drift on this section, having the majority of the rapids behind us now. At this level, the trip from Lazonby to Armathwaite is a pleasant and scenic trip, suitable for beginners with nothing more than grade II (a few odd bits at the top end of the grade) to deal with.

Dist:0.8km<br/>This outcrop of cross-bedded red sandstone is just downstream of the last rapid of any significance on the River Eden on the trip from Lazonby to Armathwaite. It is readily accessible from the river, of course, but can also be seen from a footpath on river right in Coombs Wood. The hillside above is penetrated by a short tunnel conducting the railway through the top of the spur.
