Long Clawson seems to be overtaken by renovations and new building this year. Not least is this extensive site opposite the Baptist Church on Church Lane.

Dist:0.1km<br/>Long Clawson has hosted these championships since 1983. Women were banned from the annual Vale of Belvoir Conker Championships but in 1996 they won the right to compete after their protests of sex discrimination were raised in the European parliament. After the ruling the men were forced to back down and thirty-two women joined sixty four men in the contest. A good time is had by all especially as the pub is right next to the green! The insert shows "Prince Conker", last year's winner, giving advice and encouragement to potential competitors.

Dist:0.1km<br/>There used to be two pubs in Long Clawson. The Star, on the south of The Sands, closed towards the 20th Century leaving just this one, on the north side of The Sands, to serve the whole village.

Dist:0.1km<br/>Methodism was introduced into Long Clawson in the late 1790s. The first chapel was built in 1801 [[633336]]. As the congregation grew the chapel became too small and in 1840 a new chapel was built on the present site at a cost of £1100. The Manse was built alongside the chapel in 1887. In 1954 the chapel burnt down but within weeks a committee was formed to raise funds for a replacement, with the foundation stone for the new building being laid in 1955 and the new chapel opened in 1956. Dist:0.1km<br/>The centre of this long village is The Sands, with pub, village shop, deli and interior design shop. It also has a large doctors' surgery, to the right, which serves not only the village but an extensive area of surrounding countryside. Dist:0.1km<br/>One of the three places of worship on Church Lane. Long Clawson Baptist Church was part of the New Connexion General Baptist formed in 1770. At that time the church suffered bitter persecution and so great was the opposition that the work was discontinued. It wasn't until 1840 that the Hose Baptists (founded in 1791) were successful in re-forming a work in Long Clawson when local people attended services and asked for baptism. In 1927 the chapel was renovated and a school room was added, which is commemorated in the plaque above the porch. In the 1950's a Baptistry (a large pool set into the chapel floor) was built for 'Believers' baptism.
