Dist:0.2km<br/>Most forest roads have a 40 mph limit for the protection of wildlife, but in and around Minstead the maze of narrow lanes (often with high hedges) needs a lower limit for the safety of all. You'd be nuts to drive round the blind corners at 30 mph anyway.

Dist:0.5km<br/>This Hericium erinaceum fungus (also known as "tree hedgehog fungus" or "bearded tooth") is growing on a wound on the trunk of an old oak tree in Shave Wood. It is classified as endangered in Great Britain, and its distribution is restricted to areas of woodland where there has been a long continuity of old trees.

Dist:0.5km<br/>Commonly known as fly agaric, the bright red cap is easily spotted against the leaf litter on the woodland floor. Its colour is an obvious warning against ingestion by humans - my mushroom identification book says "Do not try tasting this fungus. [In addition to muscarin and muscimol] it contains further, not yet analysed poisons which are dangerous to health and can, in rare cases, prove fatal".

Apparently it derives from a wall painting at Winchester College, where it is accompanied by the following verse: This Emblematic Figure well survey: The Porker's Snout, not nice in diet shews: *** The Padlock Shut, no secrets he'll disclose. Patient, the Ass his master's wrath will bear. Swiftness in errand, the Stagg's Feet declare; Loaded his Left Hand, apt to labour saith; The Vest, his neatness: Open hand his faith. Girt with his sword; his Shield upon his arm; Himself and Master he'll protect from harm. 'Manners Makyth Man', (top left corner) was the motto of William of Wykeham, Bishop of Winchester, and founder of both Winchester College and New College, Oxford. *** 'Not nice in diet' means, of course, 'not fussy about his food'.

A board outside explains that the pub is named after a C16 saying, explaining the qualities for an ideal Winchester College servant. See also [[2154599]].
