The river North Esk runs through Penicuik in a deep wooded valley. This is the sewage treatment plant taken from a former railway bridge over the river.

Prior to 1812 this was the only bridge across the North Esk near Penicuik. It still carries the road which links the town to what was the main road to Edinburgh or the south until a turnpike was built by Thomas Telford.

Dist:0.1km<br/>The wall is against the bank on the opposite side of the track bed of the erstwhile Penicuik-Rosewell railway to the North Esk river. The track now forms part of the Penicuik-Dalkeith Walkway.

Dist:0.1km<br/>The bridge carries a minor road linking the B7026 with the centre of Penicuik. A photo showing a similar view when the rails were in place can be seen at http://www.kosmoid.net/penicuik/railway . The railway closed in 1967, and is now giving service as the Dalkeith to Penicuik footpath and cycleway.
