Abergavenny can be seen in its wonderful location in the Usk Valley.

Dist:0.1km<br/>At some stage in Victorian times someone decided to build a house up here, possibly a hunting lodge or property associated with shooting, gamekeeping or the management of an estate encompassing the hillsides and mountains. It only has small wall remnants remaining, along with the faint layout of a garden and property boundaries.

Dist:0.2km<br/>A feature that has survived up here for years, as long as I can remember anyway. People do use it I believe. It gets overgrown with last summers bracken, which can grow very tall on this spot.

Dist:0.3km<br/>Abergavenny town lies out below in the valley of the River Usk, with Nevil Hall hospital prominent on the western fringe of the town. The Blorenge provides the backdrop and a haze obscures the valley of the Usk towards Llanellen and Llanover.

Dist:0.3km<br/>This old footpath climbs very gradually through crowded oak woodlands, which today were absolutely full of wood pigeons in their hundreds, quite a sight.

Dist:0.3km<br/>This tree, which provides a landmark for those descending the Sugar Loaf wondering how far it is to the car, stands out well on this bitterly cold morning.

Dist:0.4km<br/>This lane climbs up to High Beeches, a large house set up here on the sheltered side of the Rholben, a southerly foothill of the Sugar Loaf.

Dist:0.4km<br/>This oak woodland has lost a large proportion of its leaves and the morning sun is able to reach the woodland floor on this steep hillside transected by this path.

Dist:0.6km<br/>This oak owes its stunted shape to the fact that some power lines pass over its crown and its probably been sawed or lopped down to avoid its branches causing a problem. The hill slope to the left is part of the Deri and the small conical hill in the distance to the right is the Little Skirrid or Ysgyryd Fach. These are just two of Abergavenny's five distinctive surrounding hills and two mountains.
