This was taken on Easter Day and showed unseasonable weather for early April! However the snow soon melted here but other places in Kent had 8". As can be seen part of the terrace - The Dormy House Hotel - had suffered fire damage. The fire had occurred at the end of February 1983.

Littlestone-on-Sea was laid out towards the end of the 19th century with the intention of forming 'a marine town'. The marine town never materialised but the hotels and boarding houses facing the sea, which can be seen here beyond the beach, are more impressive than the bungalows facing the sea to the south at Greatstone-on-Sea. This photograph was taken on the morning of New Year's Day. The weather was at its best here but as the day wore on it deteriorated into a thoroughly wet, misty and miserable day.

Looking East from Littlestone seawall out to sea, one can see what is now called the Phoenix Caisson, but is in fact a section of the Mulberry harbour which came adrift whilst being towed across the channel to the D-day invasion beaches at Arromanches, June 1944. The Caisson is 1km from shore in square TR0924.

The seawall is now covered with shingle and a wall has been added along its top as a extra measure to stop the sea flooding the land. The white-painted buildings are situated in Marine Parade with the further terrace separated from the nearer by St Nicholas Road. In the far distance is the former water tower, built by the Littlestone Water Company in the 1880s.
